Dr Kate Liley is a distinguished expert with a PhD in childhood sociology, known for establishing research partnerships, leading impactful projects, and mentoring PhD students, all aimed at enhancing early childhood education and well-being.

  • About the role

    The Head of Research oversees the Research and Clinical Assessment teams and works closely with the CEO, Board, ELT, AEIOU’s Research and Innovation Committee and external stakeholders.

    The Head of Research has oversight of gold-standard clinical assessments to children with autism and uses this data to drive research and the strategic priorities of the AEIOU Foundation.

  • About the organisation

    AEIOU is a not-for-profit organisation and registered charity with DGR status. Established in 2005, AEIOU delivers high-quality therapy and care for children with level 2 and 3 autism, aged 2-6 years. At AEIOU Foundation for Children with Autism, they have a simple goal: to provide early intervention that enables children with autism to live their best lives. It’s how they do it that sets them apart from everybody else.

    Their family-centred program meets the Guidelines for Good Practice (Roberts & Prior 2012) and supports children with autism to develop essential life skills, independence and confidence. AEIOU is an approved NDIS provider and actively supports families as they engage with the Scheme.

    Along with providing early intervention, AEIOU is committed to research and chairs the AEIOU Research and Innovation Committee, are a founding partner of the Griffith University Autism Centre of Excellence (ACE), and a member of the Australian Autism Alliance.

    AEIOU provides strong advocacy for the needs of their unique cohort of children and their families to all levels of government, raising awareness and ensuring financial support is available for high quality early intervention and care for children with autism.

  • About Kate

    With a PhD in childhood sociology, Kate’s career in the government and not-for-profit sectors has focused on collaborating and generating evidence for best practice and advocacy to ensure children in their early years have equitable access to the learning, development, and wellbeing outcomes they need for school and life.

    Prior to her new role at AEIOU, Kate successfully established Goodstart Early Learning as a credible research partner, securing multiple Australian Research Council (ARC) Linkage Grants, partnership in two ARC Centres of Excellence, and co-designing several major collaborative projects with high-performance teams. These initiatives leveraged her knowledge and experience in project management, evaluation and practice excellence in teaching and learning, reflecting her ability to lead, collaborate in and conduct high-quality, impactful research.

    Kate will continue to be an industry mentor for PhD students, and currently serves as an Adjunct Industry Fellow with the Queensland Brain Institute having developed strong relationships with key stakeholders in the field of early childhood. These roles underscore her commitment to fostering collaborations with academics, practitioners, and policymakers.
