Embracing Flexible Work Models: How Women are Leading the Way

In recent years, the landscape of work has undergone a significant transformation, with flexible work models becoming increasingly prevalent. This shift has been particularly impactful here in Australia, where businesses recognise the myriad benefits of offering flexible work arrangements. At the forefront of this movement are women, who are not only advocating for, but also thriving within these new work paradigms.

The Rise of Flexible Work in Australia

Flexible work arrangements in Australia encompass a variety of models, including remote work, flexible hours, job sharing, and compressed workweeks. As of February 2025, 36.3% of employed people in Australia usually worked from home, slightly down from 37% in 2023 (1). These models have been instrumental in helping employees balance their professional and personal lives, leading to greater job satisfaction, reduced stress, and increased productivity.

Women Leading the Charge

Women have been pivotal in driving the adoption of flexible work models. Historically, women have shouldered a significant portion of caregiving and household responsibilities, making the need for flexible work arrangements more pronounced. Women were twice as likely as men to take on most of the unpaid domestic work and more than three times as likely to take on caring responsibilities (2). By advocating for and embracing these models, women are not only enhancing their own work-life balance but also setting a precedent for future workplace norms.

The Benefits of Flexibility

The benefits of flexible work models extend beyond individual employees to the organisations themselves. Organisations that adopt flexible work practices often see higher employee retention rates and greater engagement (2). These practices can help bridge the gender gap by enabling more women to participate fully in the workforce. 97% of organisations in Australia offer some form of flexible working arrangement (3), highlighting the widespread recognition of its benefits.

Moving Forward

As we continue to navigate the evolving work landscape, it is crucial for businesses to remain adaptable and open to new ways of working. By embracing flexible work models, companies can not only support their employees but also foster a more dynamic and resilient workforce. 88% of Australians prefer to work from home at least partially, with 60% favouring hybrid work models (1).

At Windsor Group we are proud to champion flexible work arrangements and support the incredible women who are leading the way. Together, we can create a more equitable and productive future for all.
