Dress to impress: What should I wear to the job interview?

The age-old conundrum that has hit all of us at one point in our job search is, “What should I wear to the interview?”

It’s a tough question with some mixed responses. But making the right first impression is important. Make a good first impression and it could be the deciding factor between you landing your dream role over another, similarly qualified candidate.

Whilst there’s no ‘one size fits all’ answer to this question. There are some agreed Do’s and Don’ts when it comes to deciding on the perfect fit and this guide will help you pick the best outfit for the interview.

Dress for your sector.

Consider the industry you’ll be in and the position you’ve applied for.

If you’ve applied for an administrative, front-of-house role where you’ll be coming face-to-face with clients daily, this may not be the best time to wear your favourite beach shorts or casual top.

Dress for the sector the employer operates in and choose an outfit that is appropriate for the environment and position. If you’re not sure what the environment will be like, remember it’s always better to edge towards formal wear over casual. Once you’ve been offered a position you can then ask the hiring manager about future workwear expectations.

Consider your choice of colour.

Picking the right colour to wear is more important than you might think.

Certain colours give off certain impressions and you want to make sure you’re giving off the right impression!

Luckily for you, we already have a handy guide on the best colours to wear for any interview. You can check it out here.

Don’t neglect online interviews.

You have an online interview coming up and you’re stuck on what to wear, but that’s ok you’ll be at home, and you can wear something comfy and casual, right? Wrong.

Even if your interview is online and you’re taking it from home you should still dress as if you are meeting the employer in person.

The best advice we’ve ever received for online interviews is to get ready in the same way as you would for an in-person interview – even down to your shoes!

Ditch the slippers and put your best foot forward in shoes that you would naturally choose to wear to work. This helps to put you in the right frame of mind for the interview and once it’s over you can switch back to your favourite pair of joggers – we won’t tell anyone.

Remain comfortable.

Interview processes are stressful enough, the last thing you need is to be dressed in an itchy suit or a tight-fitting pair of trousers, making you feel uncomfortable.

Choose pieces of clothing that fit you well and make you feel good. Your outfit shouldn’t be a hindrance to your interview experience, it should make you walk taller and exude confidence as you enter the interviewing room.

Dress to impress in your next interview.

The above guidelines should help you when choosing what to wear to your next job interview.
